52nd Avenue

It’s my favorite street in the entire metro area – even more of a favorite than Broadway at Christmas, with its twinkling blue-white lights. I love it because it’s so very out-of-the-way . . . still part of the city, but on the very edge of town. There’s this spot between a newly-erected stoplight and the roundabout that just makes my heart sing because it’s quiet, poorly lit, and near the river (enter trees).

I like to take 52nd during the day time whenever I can. It’s the long way around, with less traffic and a higher speed limit. But I love it best by night when it’s dark and you’re scanning for deer and other headlights are few and far between. I feel at home – because the country is home and it’s so close to the country; and I feel hopeful and excited about life and the unknown.

Perhaps this is because, all things considered, the area is still fairly undeveloped. I know there are endless possibilities for urban development in that neck of the woods wide open prairie; I am therefore prompted to consider possibilities for development in my life. There are so many good things that have happened and that can happen. My hope is to look back on my life, and each of its 52nd Avenues, and be delighted with the way things turned out. A cooccurring wish is that my development will not be too urban and fashionable . . . but that it will be a beautiful, fruitful reflection of my Creator’s design – not a concrete jungle with artificial light and artificial life where distractions abound, but a refuge and haven for flourishing life in a death-oriented world.

Go and proclaim in the hearing of Jerusalem, Thus says the Lord, “I remember the devotion of your youth, your love as a bride, how you followed me in the wilderness, in a land not sown.” – ‭‭Jeremiah‬ ‭2:2‬ ‭(ESV‬‬)

“Sow for yourselves righteousness; reap steadfast love; break up your fallow ground, for it is the time to seek the Lord, that he may come and rain righteousness upon you.” – Hosea‬ ‭10:12‬ ‭(ESV‬‬)
